The joint celebration to mark the OTs’ success in 2009 in the Halford Hewitt and the Cricketer Cup was held on Saturday 20th February, 2010 with a golf match between the two teams, plus some supporting others, at The Wildernesse Club, followed by a dinner at The Buck’s Head in Godden Green.
The match was played in unexpectedly very pleasant conditions, both overhead and underfoot, with The Wildernesse course being in very good shape for the time of year and given the recent atrocious weather.
There is a reason why chaps get into a Cricketer Cup side. It is because they are good at hitting a ball pretty consistently in roughly the right direction. So it proved in this match. The fact that the ball to hit was stationary rather than one hurled towards them seemed of little consequence to the OT cricketers, and with handicaps in some cases evidently of questionable legitimacy, the Cricketers came home the winners by 4 – 1. Among those who took part were Chris Walsh, Jamie Ford, Jamie Rowe, Matt Banes and Jono Arscott from the 2009 Cricketer Cup side, and Geoff Clay, Richard Partridge, John Spurling, Christo Lloyd, George Taggart and Jason Foster from the Halford Hewitt side.
The post match dinner was much enjoyed, enhanced by an engaging repertoire of stories and reminiscences from Peter Bathurst on OT cricket and golf, and the School’s legends of both sports.
A happy day, and one that may hopefully be repeated in a year’s time for the same reasons.
