On a lovely sunny and warm Sunday afternoon, with very little wind, a dozen or so OTGS members (most of whom had not ventured to Hayling Island before) enjoyed a good lunch followed by a most enjoyable round of stableford singles on a gem of a links course which, it is believed, had not previously been visited by the Society.
Admittedly in the most benign of conditions compared to what this course probably usually presents, the scoring of those in the frame was most creditable, not least by the runaway winner - Francis Sumner - who won by no less than six points over his nearest rival, with a stableford score of 42, representing a fantastic round of a net 65. (For some reason he was reluctant to let us send in his card to his home club secretary!?) Our esteemed Hon. Sec. came second with an impressive 36 points, despite nursing an injured elbow and playing the wrong ball from the middle of the fairway on a reachable par five with a stroke!
As something of an experiment to offer our membership the chance to play at a different venue, on an excellent old-fashioned links course and with the comfortable timing of lunch and a leisurely afternoon round on a Sunday, those who made the easy journey to Hayling all hailed the day as a great success and there can be few better places to enjoy a post-round drink with a group of fellow OTGS members than on the balcony of the Hayling Club in the warm of an evening overlooking the 18th hole with the Solent beyond.
