This year Seaford showed what a challenge it could provide. On Thursday there was a brisk breeze , gusting to Force 8. This led to problems from the start. While Ian Mackintosh was securing a splendid birdie 3 at the first for 4 points [In the end a considerable percentage of his total!] Stephen Stowell was searching for his ball some 70 yards off line to the right. He had played a rather expensive Bridgestone ball. Later your scribe had to confess to picking it up while leaving the second tee. The ball was returned later and apologies graciously accepted., thus avoiding a nasty incident. The fourball event was won by Chris Knight who played some majestic shots through the wind, ably supported by Giles Craven. 36 points was a decent score, beating John Crates and Colin Vokins by one shot.
By Friday morning the wind had moderated but there was light drizzle, forecast to clear. However low cloud rolled in from the sea, the rain persisted and visibility was reduced to about 100 yards. Only in the last half hour of play did conditions improve. Despit conditions spirits never flagged. In fact the challenge was rather enjoyable. Stephen Stowell, using the same ball that had been returned to him the previous evening, again tried to attack the hole from the right. This time he found the ball. His second shot flew right and long into gorse behind the green and was never seen again. John Crates navigated his way through the mist to achieve a very credible 29 points. Second place went to Andrew Sims with 28, on a count back from Colin Vokins [bridesmaid again- aah!]
Despite reduced numbers, this was again a most friendly meeting. All who attended expressed appreciation of the accommodation, the food and the golf course- a good note on which to finish the year.
