SENIOR BERNARD DARWIN
Played at Woking on 19th and 20th June : Report from Richard Gracey
The Senior Bernard Darwin again eluded us and we went out to the Old Marlburians by a whisker in the semi- final.
Our first round tie against the Old Uppinghamians was pretty straight forward and our top pair, Geoffrey Clay and Richard Gracey won on the 14th green. Martin Yates and Miles Connell were equally successful, winning 4 and 3. David Evans and John Culhane had a closer call, winning 2 and 1.
The Old Cliftonians awaited us in the second round, but they found the class play of Geoffrey Clay, in the top match, rather too much for them and they succumbed 5 and 4. Martin and Miles combined superbly to dismiss the Clifton second pair by a healthy margin but unfortunately David and John went down 2 and 1 in the bottom game.
The Old Marlburians were a different kettle of fish. Martin and Miles played excellent golf and won at a canter, but sadly our third pair was well beaten. Our top pair had a magnificent contest which went to the 20th green. The crunch moment was on the 19th hole with the Tonbridge ball sitting well placed after two shots, some twelve feet from the hole. Marlborough’s second shot was a lob from 25 yards. The ball was hit hard on the head and sped across the green, heading for heavy rough. Sadly for us the pin got in the way, the ball stopped eight feet from the hole and enabled the Marlburians to get a half and then win the next hole and the match.
A rather tired and exhausted Marlborough side, lost to Rugby in the final and we were left ruing what might have been.
