OTGS v Royal Ashdown Forest GC at Ashdown on 8th July 2007
This was a very happy 16 per side match played at Ashdown which was looking a picture. The opposition had flattered us by including five players with handicaps of 2 or less and since our lowest handicap was 7 we knew that we would be up against it.
Despite good wins by Douglas Branson and Christopher Berkeley, and by Mark Fleming and Colin Vokins, our third point had to come from the Hon. Secretary. He had been left high and dry by his partner who had failed to show up, and therefore played a singles against a foursomes pair. Though angry at his partner’s non-appearance he remained sufficiently cool to win and keep the morning deficit just within reach.
However the home team was very good at lunching and, despite the first four afternoon matches being halved, Ashdown gradually forged well clear and won by rather too big a margin (10 ½ - 5 ½).
Special mention should be given to George Luck and Piers Scrimshaw-Wright whose four opponents’ handicaps totalled seven in all. They had a tough day!
