Old Carthusians

Date:2nd September 2007
Venue:R.Ashdown Forest G.C.

Result: WON by 4 1/2 - 3 1/2

Once again we enjoyed a splendid match against the Old Carthusians at Ashdown. It was curious that both sides had some difficulty in raising their teams but perhaps it was just a funny year. In the event we played seven men per side with a singles match and three foursomes matches being played in both the morning and the afternoon.

We had a disappointing morning and for the second year running we came in to lunch trailing by 3 matches to 1. Happily (with the lunchtime wines at stake) our post-prandial golf was splendid and we turned the deficit around (as in the last encounter) emerging victorious by 3 1/2 to 1/2 in the afternoon and winning the overall match (and the wine) by 4 1/2 to 3 1/2. There was the merest suggestion of a gloat but we had been subjected to some flak from the Carthusians at lunch so it seemed only fair!

So far as I can see from the report written by Roddy Gamble, the Carthusian Captain, his remarks concentrated on the fact that he had beaten the Hon. Sec in the morning singles and this seemed to be of greater importance than the overall result. The words "clutching at straws" and "very flattering that it mattered so much to him" spring to mind!
