Report on the OTGS Halford Hewitt Trials prior to the 2007 Halford Hewitt.
Our Halford Hewitt Captain, Nick Kemp, devised an ingenious, if rather sadistic, modified Stableford scoring system to help him select our team. With so many really excellent golfers competing for places the team was always going to be very difficult to select - and so it proved.
There were some "Captain’s Picks" made in advance, but the rest of the contenders for places were required to play a minimum of 45 holes in trials held at Sandwich and Deal prior to the last places being determined at the Spring Meeting at Rye very recently.
Nick announced his team at the end of the Spring Meeting and it is (in no particular order) as follows :
Geoff Clay and George Taggart
Christo Lloyd and Richard Partridge
Bryan Ingleby and Jonathan Hubbard
Nick Kemp and Colin Jones
Jonathan Spurling and James Horn
This is a very strong team and we are delighted to see James Horn included for the first time. James left school in 2004 and plays off scratch at Royal St George’s where we will play our first two rounds (always presuming we are successful in the first!).
Jason Foster, another young golfer in his mid-twenties played beautifully in the trials and also earned a place in the team only to have to withdraw through illness. His time will surely come.
The Hewitt starts on Thursday (1.00pm at Sandwich v Wellington) and we look forward to welcoming as many of our members as can be there to support us.
