OTGS Summer Meeting at New Zealand GC : Tuesday 24th June

Report from Tony Monteuuis

Heaven knows why these things happen but this year there were only 15 people present for our Summer Meeting at New Zealand. It really is a lovely and quite testing course and we have been entertained royally over the past few years. With two starting points within one minute from the clubhouse it is always a relaxed and happy day on a course which we virtually have to ourselves.

Anyway, Tim Jenkins won the scratch with a good round of 71 - though both Adrian Cooper and Tony Monteuuis seemed to have the beating of him for most of their rounds. It was a particular pleasure to see Lewis Sturdy, an OTGS star of the future who made a very good effort to be with us fresh off the plane from his American university. He is a scratch golfer and we all hope to see Lewis starring in our Hewitt teams once his time in America is over. With a lost ball and a disaster hole his score in the morning would not have pleased him but it was a pleasure to play with him and to see that he lost none of his charm despite a poor round (by his standards).

Jonathan Davie won the handicap singles in the morning with a very good 39 points, one clear of our Captain, Colin Vokins. Many of those present were pretty happy with the way they had played so a good morning was much enjoyed.

After a leisurely and splendid lunch, the afternoon foursomes was won by Adrian Cooper and Ian Cowdroy with 36 points. They pipped Tim Jenkins and Mike Haddleton on countback.

It is to be hoped that there will be a much better turnout next year. If anyone has a good reason for not supporting this event I would love to hear from them, because I am mystified as to why we struggled to have a decent turnout this year. It is hard work for me and makes us less popular visitors if we arrive with fewer players than anticipated.
