OTGS v Royal Ashdown Forest on 6th July 2008

Simon Lee (who nobly stood in for us at the last minute) when we had to endure a last minute "chuck" only played in the morning because he had agreed to play cricket in the afternoon. My, how we all laughed when he left in a downpour before lunch to go to his cricket match because all cricket in Sussex looked sure to be cancelled!

However, he and Tony Buckland had put us in front by winning at the top of the order beating a handy pair. Simon’s willingness to help out despite his other commitment would have been a good effort in a man half his age so full marks and many thanks!

Mark Fleming and Richard Dresner had a good win in their match and by all accounts played extremely well. Oli Boreham and The Hon. Secretary made an unimpressive start and lost the first three holes. However they recovered to win a very tight and most enjoyable match 2/1 by playing their last 14 holes in level par despite the worsening weather.

All the morning foursomes had been tightly contested and the two teams shared the six matches equally.

At lunch the two captains received representations that the weather was too awful for an enjoyable afternoon round so the match was declared a half. This enabled eight of those present to disappear (maybe to watch the Federer / Nadal Wimbledon Final or maybe to soak away their cares). The hardier (or less sober) souls, who wanted to walk off their lunches and defy the weather forecasters, played nine holes and were delighted to play in infinitely better weather than the Jeremiahs had predicted. These afternoon matches had been deemed "unofficial" (but "unofficially" we had the better of the afternoon golf so perhaps we should have insisted that these matches should have counted towards the overall result!).
