OTGS Under 30s Meeting at R. Ashdown Forest GC. Sun 21st September
Report from Tony Monteuuis
Yet again it has proved very difficult to persuade our younger members to attend this meeting despite the remarkable value on offer. This year there could have been some slight excuse because the meeting took place on the Sunday of the Ryder Cup. However, play in the USA was not scheduled to start until 5.30pm (our time) so it was in fact possible for everyone to have enjoyed both events.
Anyway, it was very regrettable that only 6 people attended and however much they might have enjoyed their day, the event could only be regarded as a failure. To add insult to injury we were staggered to find that the greens at Ashdown had been very heavily spiked the previous day and had been left in an unplayable condition - so perhaps it was a good thing that more people were not subjected to such dreadful conditions. Maintenance is the price of good greens but in my time as Hon. Secretary I have never before seen greens presented in that condition - and at Ashdown of all places.
The Under 30s Meeting has run for eight years and has only once been well supported. Every year it is like drawing teeth to get people to play so I have therefore decided to discontinue the event and we will find other ways to encourage our junior golfers to enjoy OTGS golf. Further we will not use this particular date at Ashdown for another match because the conditions we encountered were simply awful and there can be no guarantee that this will not happen again.
My thanks to those who did play!
