Senior Darwin Report 2009

Last year’s experience taught me that getting a six man team of ‘Seniors’ to the first tee is far from easy. This year it was the turn of Richard Gracey (‘my body is refusing to co-operate with the demands I am making on it’) to stand down with just ten days to go. Fortunately Patrick Cogan was found to take his place. However, on the actual day a closure of the M25 meant that both he and David Evans were not present by the time I had to submit the teamsheet, thirty minutes before the off. A hasty re-arranging of the pairings resulted in Geoff Clay and Neil Williamson, followed by Miles Connell and your Captain, with the latecomers to bring up the rear if they arrived and to lose only one point if they did not. In the event they managed both! Nevertheless, Winchester were beaten in the top two games, a result which was cheerfully repeated against Charterhouse in the afternoon. Williamson (with some help) saw off Martin Christmas (Walker Cup 1961-63) and will be dining out on this success for years to come. In the semi-final against Wellington, David Frame (Walker Cup 1961) proved too strong for Neil’s lightning to strike twice and, with the woes of Cogan and Evans continuing, our title defence was over. Wellington then lost to Marlborough in the final.

Martin Yates, Captain.
