Having spiflicated them last year, the OT team arrived at The Berkshire full of confidence to repeat their victory against the Old Marlburians on another beautiful Autumn day, but the OMs, it seemed, were bent on revenge this year, and had put up a much stronger and more youthful team than in 2008.
Despite the organiser’s two banker pairs of Berkeley & Monteuuis, and Mackintosh & Golding-Wood, the latter in particular being regarded by the OT team manager as certain winners in any handicap company, surprisingly both being beaten on the 17th , we still managed to go into lunch 2-2, with a fine victory by Parkin & Mathieu who crushed their opposition 6/5, and with Cooper & Crates, the latter putting as usual like a magician, managing to win despite Crates not being put on a single fairway by his wayward partner.
All set to press on to victory after the customary excellent Berkshire lunch, with another set of quality OT pairings, something (perhaps greater OM abstemiousness?) caused us to go off the rails, and disappointingly, we only managed to win one afternoon match. The combination of an excellent venue, against most hospitable opposition, in typically fine early Autumn weather, at a weekend, and all for the princely sum of £55 for two rounds of golf, lunch and wine is surely the best opportunity going, so please contact the match manager early if you would like to take part in the 2010 repeat fixture on Saturday, 25th September.
