OTGS v Old Fettesians at Denham on 13th February 2010 Report from Tony Monteuuis
After a nervous fortnight wondering whether this fixture would once again fall victim to what had been the deepest and most prolonged snowfall since 1963, we were delighted to hear that Denham was playable. Despite appeals to the whole society (twice!) we were disappointed to be left one short for the match but happily Denham provided a replacement - one man for the morning and another for the afternoon. Each of these good men won his match!
The course was quite wet but we were delighted to find that the greens were true and surprisingly fast. The Fettesians gave us their usual warm welcome and the match was all square before a very good lunch, which was enhanced by the very generous gift of three bottles of champagne from Denham GC to help us celebrate their centenary this year. Douglas Meikle had certainly won the long driving competition since he had come all the way from Dorchester, which was a sterling effort. Charlie Ellison returning to OTGS golf after too long a break played very well with the Hon. Secretary to win convincingly against good opposition and John Crisp by all accounts played very solidly with his Denham partner to win by 3/2. Alas the other pairs did less well and were heavily beaten.
In the afternoon we went out with high hopes of winning. Oli Knight and his partner from Denham (a Taggart but sadly not one of the Tonbridge Taggarts) won their game nicely but sadly we could only salvage half a point (from Will Coltart and Charlie Ellison) from the other three matches. Graham Dudley and John Crisp got very close but lost at the 18th in the pivotal match. With the Hon. Secretary and Doug Meikle being well beaten the overall result was a win for Fettes by 4 ½ - 3 ½. It had been an excellent match and we plan to push the date back to the end of February in 2011 in the hope that a few more OTs might feel warm enough to support what really is a most enjoyable fixture.
