The Public Schools Putting Tournament at R.Wimbledon in June.                                    Report from Tony Monteuuis

After winning this competition for the first time last year we returned determined to give a good account of ourselves. In the Qualifying Round the team played well with Jonathan Hubbard, Tony Monteuuis, Christo Lloyd and Richard Proctor representing us. It was a powerful unit and we qualified for the Final (the following week) in first place.

Tony Monteuuis had planned to stand down in favour of the mighty putting machine that is Bryan Ingleby. In last year's Final Bryan won all his seven matches (as well as the play off) so we felt very strong once again. However it turned out that Richard Proctor could not play on the day so Tony stayed in the team. Then a big blow, Christo Lloyd fell by the wayside at a late stage, and Charles Tilling very nobly came into the side after some years on the sidelines. Some of our opponents felt that we had been rather weakened but the team battled hard and defied the pessimists. Messrs Hubbard, Ingleby, Tilling and Monteuuis all performed well and after a very tight battle against Charterhouse in particular we were delighted to retain the Bunny Millard Putter.

This competition has become a very much stronger event in the past few years with many Hewitt players taking part.  It was therefore a particular pleasure to win it again with a competitive but hopefully genial side - and in doing so we proved that past reputations are not necessarily a guarantee of success.

And it would be such fun to complete the hat-trick next summer!
